How Sustainability is Shaping the Future of Uniform Design

5/12/2025

Uniforms have always been about function, identity, and professionalism. But today, they’re also about responsibility. Sustainability isn’t just influencing uniform design—it’s redefining it. At Deane, we believe that every stitch, every fibre, and every choice matters. Here’s how we’re weaving sustainability into the fabric of our future.

From Materials to Mindset: The Shift Towards Responsible Design

The biggest change starts with what uniforms are made of. Polyester has long been the go-to for durability, but its environmental impact is significant. That’s why we’re working towards transitioning to recycled polyester sourced from post-consumer plastic bottles, reducing fossil fuel dependency and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. We’re also exploring organic and traceable cotton, and trialling innovative fibres like bio-based synthetics to ensure comfort and performance with less environmental impact.

Designing for Longevity and Circularity

Sustainability isn’t just about what goes into a garment—it’s about what happens after. Our goal is to extend the life of every uniform and implement solutions for end-of-life. From durability testing to preloved take-back programmes, we’re creating circular business models that keep textiles out of landfill. By 2028, we aim to divert 95% of Deane garments from landfill and achieve a 75% reduction in waste across our operations and supply chain.

Innovation Without Compromise

We know sustainability can’t come at the cost of quality or style. That’s why we rigorously test every new fabric in real-world conditions. Our recent wool blend suiting innovation combined recycled polyester, washable wool, and ROICA™ stretch fibre—delivering durability, comfort, and easy care without dry cleaning. Wearer trials confirmed what we already believed: sustainable can be smart, stylish, and practical.

Packaging and Beyond

It’s not just the garment that matters. In line with our newly release Sustainable Packaging Standards, we’ve cut single-use plastic polybags by 13% and moved 99% of our suppliers to post-consumer recycled packaging. By 2025, all packaging will be reusable, recyclable, or compostable. Every detail counts when you’re designing for a better planet.

Why It Matters

Sustainability isn’t a trend—it’s a responsibility. For us, it’s about creating uniforms that empower teams while protecting the world they work in. When you choose Deane, you’re choosing a partner committed to ethical sourcing, innovative design, and a future where fashion and function meet environmental stewardship.
